Our History
Lagos mainland local government as it is today, is the new Lagos mainland local government in which Yaba Local Council Development Area LCDA was created out of Lagos mainland LG which gave birth to new Lagos mainland after a successful referendum in 2003 by all the local government councilors in Lagos State and their recommendation passed into law by the Lagos State House of Assembly, creating additional 37LCDA/20LG in Lagos State, under the Administration of His Excellency the Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
1976
This made the old Secretariat of the Lagos mainland LG at Herbert Macauley to move to its present place now which is situated at 2, Ondo Street EBUTE-METTA West. The local government is made up of 9wards.
The old Lagos Mainland Local Government was created in 1977, as a distinct Local Government that was carved out of the old Lagos City Council, which then administered by the Lagos Metropolitan City Council, which comprised of Lagos Island and Lagos Mainland following the National reform of local Government administration by the Federal Government in September 1976.
1991
The creation of additional three Local governments on August 27th 1991 saw the creation of Surulere LG was carved out of Mainland LG.
Lagos Mainland Local Government is the oldest local government in the state. It is a Commercial nerve center for all Nigerians, and it is dominated predominantly by Nigerians of different culture and background.
The present executive chairman Hon. Mrs Omolola Rashidat Essien is the democratically elected chairman.
Economic Activities
Lagos mainland local government is characterized by numerous creeks, water, swamps and hence the rural economic activities of the earlier inhabitants of the territory was mostly fishing followed by hunting, craft work, farming especially spices, fruits and vegetables as secondary activities. However, due to rapid urbanization and industrialization indigenes and residents of the area have taken to modern production process and advancement of modern industries such as banking, oil and gas, communication and housing sectors. Fishing activities however, retained its prime position in Makoko area of the council.
Location
The council area is part of what was originally known as Lagos Island. It is situated at 2, Ondo street Ebute Metta West, an historical and ancient place which have an historical ancient building in it compound. It beside the famous railway complex an historical place where the Queen of England once visited.
